Sleeplessness is a problem common to people in grief. A chronic lack of sleep leaves us mentally and physicall exhausted as well as less able to cope with overwhelming grief and the usual daily stress of living. Here are some suggestions that might help.

Don’t nap during the day. Set a definite time to go to bed and get up.

Excercise daily.

Avoid cola’s, medications, coffee and tea in the evening.

Take time to unwind.

Don’t go to bed after a flurry of activity, either mental or physical.

Take a bath and/or drink warm milk before retiring.

Read something light and interesting, not the type that stirs one up.

Try to think pleasant relaxing thoughts.

Listen to relaxing music.

If you don’t fall asleep right away, get up and do something before trying again.

Keep a notebook when you can’t sleep.
