Anthony "Tom" Lagina, a devoted educator, loving family man, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, in Flat Rock, Michigan. Born in Iron Mountain, Michigan, Tom’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to both his family and the many lives he touched through his career and personal endeavors.

Tom’s educational journey was one characterized by dedication and excellence. After graduating from Iron Mountain High School in 1959, he pursued higher education with vigor, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Math and Chemistry from Western Michigan University in 1964. He furthered his studies with a Master’s degree in Teaching of Science and Physics from The College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1970. His passion for learning was rewarded early when he attended Bucknell University on a prestigious National Science Foundation Scholarship, a testament to his intellectual rigor and commitment to the sciences.

His professional life was as distinguished as his academic achievements. Tom devoted nearly five decades to education, beginning as a teacher of Math, Science, and Physics in Southgate Community Schools, where he worked for 40 years. His dedication was recognized when he was honored as Teacher of the Year at Southgate Community Schools in 1995, an accolade reflecting the profound impact he had on students and colleagues alike. Following this, he shared his vast knowledge at Davenport University, teaching Math and Physics for ten years. Beyond the classroom, Tom also dedicated many years as a football and basketball coach for Southgate Community Schools, influencing not only academic growth but also physical development and teamwork among his students.

Tom was much more than an educator. At heart, he was a man devoted to his family and his community, bearing a generous spirit evident to all who knew him. He found joy in a variety of pursuits including running, biking, rollerblading, pickup basketball, reading, and traveling. His heart was fullest when sharing adventures with loved ones. Together with his wife and family, he explored the wonders of the world, traveling extensively to Alaska, Hawaii, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Mexico, and the Caribbean Islands. Tom and Sharon's European river cruises stand out as treasured memories of shared discovery and companionship.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife Sharon Lagina née Richardson, his son Dr. Anthony Thomas Lagina and daughter-in-law Dr. Natasha Robinette, granddaughter Gianna Lagina, daughter Dr. Amy Lagina and son-in-law Brian Kunkel, and granddaughter Evelyn Kunkel. These cherishers of his legacy carry forward his passion for life, learning, and love.

He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Lagina, his father Anthony Thomas "Tony" Lagina I, and his brother Kenneth Lagina. Their memory lives on in the stories and hearts of those who loved him.
