It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Antonia Gonzalez, who departed this world peacefully on May 23, 2026, at the age of 89. Antonia was surrounded by her loving family, a testament to the profound bonds she nurtured throughout her life.
Born on January 19, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas, Antonia was the cherished daughter of Ambrosio Puente and Tomasa Lara, who predeceased her along with her siblings Esperanza and Alicia, husband Valentin and her children Carmen (predeceased husband Joe), Jesse (Coco), Lydia (husband Jimmy), and Miguel (Chico). Despite these losses, Antonia's spirit remained unyielding, fortified by the love and memories she shared with her family.
Antonia, affectionately known as "Mrs. G" by countless students, dedicated her career to the Detroit Public School system which included Preston, Neinas, Roberto Clemente, Webster, Maybury, Southwestern and Bennet. She made a significant impact at Southwestern High School and later as the Principal of Bennet Elementary School in Detroit, where she retired in 2010. Her compassion and dedication to education left an indelible mark on the lives of many young learners. Antonia was known for staying late to help students, organizing summer school programs, and finding mentors, always with the aim of guiding her students toward brighter futures. Her dedication was recognized with the Outstanding Service and Contributions award, a testament to her tireless efforts to create a nurturing and challenging environment for her students.
Antonia's dedication to education was matched only by her commitment to community service. She was an active member of the Council Against Gang Related Violence, where she worked tirelessly to create a safer environment for all children. Her involvement with the City-Wide Bilingual Education Advisory Committee reflected her commitment to inclusivity and her belief in the power of education to bridge cultural divides. Her achievements were many, and her accolades numerous, including the prestigious Certificate for Outstanding Achievement, National Center for Mediated Learning and Scholastic's Honor Award, Kappa-Delta Pi. Each award was a reflection of her unwavering dedication and the profound impact she had on her community.
A woman of remarkable wit and grace, Antonia was celebrated for her quick humor and captivating eyes. Her generosity knew no bounds, whether it was lending her car to her baby brother Joe or offering support to family and friends in times of need. She found joy in dancing, bargain hunting at garage sales or the local Salvation Army with her sister Tina and brother Joe, and spending quality time with her family—especially during barbecues, birthdays, and holiday gatherings. Antonia also had a passion for traveling. She truly loved exploring new places and took trips quite frequently, always eager for another adventure. Most of her getaways were spent with her sister Alicia. Together, they made wonderful memories and enjoyed discovering beautiful destinations. Their travels were filled with laughter, bonding, and a love for experiencing the world side by side.
Her family was her greatest pride and joy, and she leaves behind a rich legacy through her siblings Ernestina, Eva, Joe, Gilbert, her children, Thomas, Catherine, Cesar (and wife Sonia), Cristina (and husband Alex), and grandchildren Rachel, Maria, Christy, Jesse, Nicole, the late Thomas, Celeste, Eric, James, Matthew, Tiffany, Jennifer, Lucinda, Miguel, Michael, Valencia, Verenna, Vivianna, Cesar, Alexis, Antonio and Amilio. Her legacy continues through her 22 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild each a testament to the enduring love she cultivated.
Antonia's life will be celebrated at the Martenson Funeral Home, located at 10915 Allen Rd., Allen Park, Michigan 48101. Her family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Corewell Health Trenton Hospital for their compassion and care during Antonia's final moments.
In this time of sorrow, we find comfort in knowing that Antonia’s kindness and love will forever reside in our hearts. Her spirit lives on through each life she touched, and her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
"A mother's love is eternal-so is her absence."
