Catherine Jean Mahoney, age 92, died peacefully at her residence at Samaritas Senior Living in Grand Rapids. Born on October 26, 1930 in Trenton, Michigan to Matthew and Lena Staniger. She was their firstborn and the oldest of six girls.

Cathy married Leonard Mahoney in 1949, they had five children and lived in Trenton and for

many of their retirement years in Tucson, Arizona.

Over the decades, she was active as an at-home mom to her family and managed to make time in her busy schedule to volunteer in the community. As the children got older, she worked as school para-professional and librarian. She loved working with children and became a teacher of those who were in the pre-school years. Catherine then created her own family child-care business and was a caregiver to little ones. In her later years she worked at Beaumont Hospital as a receptionist in the family waiting room at the surgical center. She helped people at this vulnerable time and was good at assisting these families. She was also a lover of dogs and raised litters of chihuahuas. In the last seven years, Catherine moved to Grand Rapids to reside at the caring community of Samaritas and lived in their skilled nursing facility at The Lodge.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents Matthew and Lena Staniger, her former husband, Leonard Mahoney, her sisters, Mary Pearson and Francis Martin. She is survived by her children Judy (Tom) Freeman Walker, Charlene Konarske, Pamela Gossar, Sally (Mark) Mahoney Hagbom and Leonard (Alice) Mahoney. Also by her sisters Lorraine (Joe) Lesner, Lee DiPonio and Janice Pinkston.

Grandchildren include Natalie (Andrew) Hamm, Ashley Freeman Nichols, Jennifer Konarske, Ryan Konarske, Steve (Deb) Ratelle, Kara (A.J.) Spicer Smith, A.J. Hagbom, Katy Hagbom, Matthew Mahoney, Nicki (Austin) Kidd, Michael (Jennifer) Long, Brian Mahoney and Lenny Mahoney. Great-grandchildren include: Olivia and Allyson Nichols, Eloise and George Hamm, Vincent and Lauren Guariniello, Hailey Konarske, Jacob and Rylan Ratelle, Hallie Smith, Maddy and Max Kidd and Scarlet and Ian Long.

Catherine’s family would like to thank the loving communities of Samaritas and Faith Hospice for her care. Memorial contributions can be sent to Samaritas or Faith Hospice in Grand Rapids, in Catherine’s name.

A visitation and memorial service will be held at Martenson Funeral Home- Ridge Chapel at 2272 West Jefferson, Trenton, Michigan on Sunday, November 27th. Visitation is from 11:00am-1:00pm with a celebration of life service at 1:00pm.
