Catherine Slusarz, 75, of Woodhaven, passed away on June 5, 2026. Born on December 30, Alma, MI, she was raised in Detroit by her parents Marnel and Virginia along with siblings Betty, Sandy, Michael and Madeline. As a teen, she met her high school sweetheart Dennis with whom she married in 1971 and went on to share 54 wonderful years. Together, they defined their vows “in sickness and in health” and created a legacy of commitment and cherished memories which inspired those around them. Her greatest pride and joy in life was her family. Her children Christine, Dennis Jr., Jeanette (Mike) Iacovacci and grandchildren Kaitlin and Austin. If you wanted to see that special sparkle in her eye, you just had to let her talk about them. There was no accomplishment too small that she would not brag about. From her childhood, she knew she wanted nothing more than to be a mother. While her kids were growing up, she worked at the school, was at every sporting event, dance competition, award ceremony or volunteer opportunity. Where her children were, she was never far behind. As they grew, she went on to look after many of her great nieces and nephews in her home. When one would head off to school, her door would open to another. Even into her 60's she was watching her grandson daily, continuing her desire to be surrounded by the love of a child. If there was somewhere to be for her children and grandchildren, she was there. Catherine enjoyed many simple pleasures. From early in their marriage, she and Dennis spent summers camping at the lake along with her siblings and extended family. The lake became their regular vacation spot. As families grew, the next generation would join in. She began playing the organ at a young age and continued throughout her life. Family has vivid memories of her playing “Unchained Melody” in the living room of her home. She found excitement in visiting the casino or even sitting around a card table with her family playing quarter poker games. Catherine had a knack for painting. Many family members are blessed to have handmade gifts or ceramic pieces she painted over the years. Celebrations throughout life often included themed cakes she made for the occasion. Above all, Catherine was an avid believer in God and the power of prayer. In all things, she drew strength from her faith and shared it with those around her. Catherine will be remembered for her loving heart, devotion to family and the comfort and encouragement she brought to those around her. She will be missed beyond measure, but her memory will live on in those who knew and loved her. Catherine is survived by her true love, Dennis Sr., her children Dennis Jr., and Jeanette (Mike) Iacovacci as well as grandchildren Kaitlin and Austin. She was predeceased by her daughter Christine, with whom she is now reunited. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 9th, from 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM. The rosary will be recited in Catherine's honor at 7:00 PM. On Wednesday, June 10th, Catherine will lie instate at Our Lady of the Scapular Parish (Mt. Carmel) beginning at 9:30 AM until Mass begins at 10:00 AM. Following Mass, we will be driving in procession to Our Lady of Hope Cemetery for committal prayers.
