Gilbert C. Steinman, age 80, passed away unexpectedly at home. He was born to Walter J. and Nina (Jones) Steinman Sr. on the Steinman Centennial farm in Maybee, which he still owned. A lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maybee, he attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Dundee High School in 1951. He attended Michigan State College where he was a member of the Air Force Reserve, was drafted into the United States Army, and was stationed in El Paso, Texas. He played softball for the Army and then later for the Men's League in Maybee. Gilbert worked for Monroe County Equalization Department, retiring after 26 years. He worked many years as an Assessor for both Raisinville and Ida Townships. He was a member of the St. Joseph Men's Club, Michigan Assessor's Association, and a former member of the Floral City Harmonizers Barbershop Chorus. On August 7, 1954, Gilbert married Dolores Pointer. She preceded him in death April 25, 2010. Gilbert is survived by 8 children: Carlina Breitner of Bear Lake, Debra (Julius) Burkey of Maybee, Maria Wright of Tiffin, Ohio, Linda (William) Shurlow of Potterville, Patricia Steinman of Leeton, Missouri, Cynthia Janisko of Massillon, Ohio, Paul (Colleen) Steinman of Wesley Chapel, Florida and Melissa (Steve) Borbely of Maybee. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Susan (Richard) Kull of Monroe. In addition to his wife, Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David, sons-in-law Mark Breitner and Sidney Wright, and his brothers, Walter, Douglas and Raymond. Gilbert was a pillar of the Church, family and community. He will be deeply missed. He will lie in state in St. Joseph Catholic Church Tuesday from 10-11 am. The Rite of Christian burial mass will be celebrated at 11 am. Memorial contributions in Gilbert's name can be made to The Lutheran Home, Monroe, St. Joseph Men's Club, Maybee, and St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat Center, Detroit.
