Gwendolyn Elaine McElwaney, a cherished educator and an inspiring member of the community, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026. Gwen was born on February 11, 1951 to Thadeous and Cullie (Embrey) Nall.
A proud graduate of Clawson High School, Gwen went on to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree from Baldwin-Wallace College. Gwen later earned a Master’s Degree in Musical Education while balancing the early years of parenthood.
Gwen's life and music were inexorably linked. She began playing piano at age 4 and fostered her love of music into a lifelong passion and career. A proficient instrumentalist of several instruments and a stunning Soprano, she brought her love of music to children in innumerable capacities. She was a Teacher of Primary Music Education for Grosse Ile Township Schools, a role she held for more than 37 years, before her retirement in 2011. During this time, Gwen staged and directed thousands of students in a myriad of productions inspiring generations of musicians. She served as the children's choir director at her church for decades where she worked to produce interfaith performances. Gwen was also a director and performer in the illustrious Boar's Head pageant and a choral member of the esteemed Vanguard Voices in Dearborn. Gwen believed in the transformative power of the arts. Her influence will resonate for generations.
Gwen was not only an esteemed teacher but also a faithful member of the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church, where she participated in the choir, sharing her angelic voice and spiritual presence with her congregation. She demonstrated her faith most visibly through her service to others. In particular, she felt called by God to create the Bottoms Up Diaper Bank, a non-profit charitable organization providing diapers to underserved communities and raising awareness of this critical need. The bank has provided more than a million diapers to children and families, a milestone of which Gwen was particularly proud.
Family was at the center of Gwen's world as reflected by her incredible work ethic and her support. She was deeply loved by her family. She is survived by her three children: Dave McElwaney, Sarah (Clint Walter) McElwaney, and Christine (Dave) Litwin. The joy of her life continued with her grandchildren: Adam McElwaney, Hugo Walter, and Henryk Litwin, with whom she maintained unique and special relationships. She is also survived by her brother Ed (Devota) Nall and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gwen’s legacy will live on through the thousands of families and individuals she has impacted through her teaching, volunteering, philanthropic efforts, and her family. Her impact will be felt for years through the dozens of ways she strove to make the world a better place, full of music and laughter. Gwen will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing her or being touched through her myriad works.
In this time of sorrow, we remember Gwendolyn Elaine McElwaney as a beacon of kindness, a source of inspiration, and a devoted matriarch whose heart was as big as her passion for music and service. She will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her family welcomes all who knew Gwen to join them for her Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, February 28th, 10:00 am, at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church, 7925 Horse Mill Rd, Grosse Ile Township, MI 48138. Colorful clothing to celebrate Gwen’s cheerful spirit is encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation be made in Gwen’s honor to the Bottom’s Up Diaper Bank. 7925 Horsemill Rd., Grosse Ile, MI, United States, 48138; bottomsupdiaperbank@yahoo.com.
