James Wesley Bowens Sr., age 78, of Lincoln Park, Michigan, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025. Born on May 12, 1947, in Virginia, James lived a life marked by service, devotion to family, and a profound love for sports, especially the game of baseball.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma Jeanelle Ely, his beloved wife, Carole Bowens, and his son, Matthew Bowens. He is survived by his sons Jason Bowens, with children Tyler and Hailey Bowens, and James Bowens II, with wife Maureen Bowens and children Brittany (Kevan) and Devin Bowens. Brittany and Kevan are joyfully expecting a baby boy, who would have been James first great-grandchild. He also leaves behind many other cherished family and friends.
James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he fought in the Vietnam War. His dedication to veterans continued throughout his life, as he volunteered at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for 50 years, including serving eight years as Commander. His leadership and steadfast commitment touched countless lives within the veteran community.
Following the tragic death of his son, Matthew, who was killed in the line of duty, James answered the call to public service once again. He served as Police Commissioner for ten years, helping guide the department with integrity, fairness, and compassion. His tenure was defined by a deep respect for law enforcement and a determination to honor his son’s sacrifice through service to the local officers and community.
For nearly four decades, Lincoln Park was home to James, where he became a fixture in local athletics. He coached and umpired baseball and softball for over 40 years and played the games himself over multiple decades. His passion for the sport was matched only by his joy in mentoring young athletes and fostering a love of the game. Generations of players and families benefited from his countless volunteer hours and many to this day still refer to him as “Coach Bowens.”
Above all, James treasured his grandchildren. Whether cheering from the sidelines or playing games with them, he found his greatest happiness in their laughter and accomplishments. They were truly his pride and joy. James Wesley Bowens Sr. will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, coach, community volunteer and friend. His legacy of service, sportsmanship, and love will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will take place at The Allen Park Chapel of The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes on Monday, December 15, 2025 fr4om 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm. A honor guard service and funeral service will begin at 6:00 pm.
