James L. Holland

Listen to Obituary

Bishop James L. Holland, born September 9, 1942, departed peacefully on August 15, 2026, after a life defined by devotion, wisdom, and unfailing kindness. As a beloved figure in his community, Jim leaves behind a legacy woven from faith, service, and the deep, enduring relationships he nurtured.

Jim answered the call to serve his country as a proud member of the United States Army. His patriotism and commitment to the greater good were hallmarks that remained with him long after he left the uniform behind. But it was within the Church of God of Prophecy that Jim most profoundly shaped lives, humbly and steadfastly serving as Pastor and Bishop. His spiritual leadership resonated through every soul he touched—he was a mentor to countless, a spiritual father whose guidance and caring nature became foundational for many.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Jim often spoke of his unparalleled generosity of spirit. He was not just a guide in faith, but a steadfast friend—someone who opened his heart and resources to many. Survived by his many adopted children, the Hamiltons, the Harpers and others, whom he loved dearly. He was lovingly called "Papa" by a host of grandchildren. Jim’s family extended beyond bloodlines. His nurturing presence created bonds that will live on for generations.

Cherished memories are especially held close by those who now grieve his passing. Among his surviving family are his brother, Lawrence Eugene; aunts, Doris Jeanette Frye, and Gladys Odene Milam; sister-in-law, Marlyn Gainey; nephews and niece, Deric Holland, Marc Holland, Eric Holland, and Shea Thomas; each carry a piece of James’s love, wisdom, and infectious warmth forward.

Jim is reunited in eternal rest with his devoted wife, Millie, whose memory and partnership brought him immense joy throughout his days. He is also preceded in death by his father Harold and his mother Margaret Holland, and his brother Byron Wayne.

The life Jim built was one of steadfast faith and compassion—a gentle pillar for all who needed comfort, counsel, or hope. His home, much like his heart, was always open. As bishop, mentor, pastor, and “Papa,” he became a beacon for those navigating life’s challenges. The stories shared by those he mentored, worshipped with, loved, and protected will continue to light the way for many.

The family welcomes friends and community members to join in honoring James’s life.
