James Nelson, born December 21, 1947, passed away on September 27, 2026.

A lifelong educator, coach, community leader, and devoted family man, James built a life marked by service, achievement, and lasting connection with the people and institutions he cared about most. He graduated from Lincoln Park High School in 1966, then continued his education at Eastern Michigan University, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1971 and his master’s degree in 1972.

James went on to serve the University as a member of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department from 1971 to 1985. During those years, he also served as Eastern Michigan University Golf Coach from 1972 to 1985, helping to shape the program and mentor student-athletes with dedication and pride. His leadership in collegiate golf extended well beyond campus. From 1979 to 1985, he was President of the Mid-American Conference Golf Coaches Association, and during those same years he served as Chairman of the NCAA District IV Selection Committee. In 1980, he was named the MAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year, an honor that reflected both his skill as a coach and the respect he earned from colleagues throughout the sport. During his tenure at EMU, he produced several All-American golfers, leaving a meaningful legacy through the athletes he guided.

His connection to Eastern Michigan remained strong throughout his life. In 1991, he was selected as EMU’s Alumni Golfer of the Year. He also served as President of the E-Letterwinners Club and was a member of its board of directors, continuing to give his time and leadership to the university community.

James also made a significant impact in higher education beyond Eastern Michigan. From 1989 to 1993, he served as department chairman of the Henry Ford Community College Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department. Since 1990, he was co-chair of the Adray Memorial Golf Tournament sponsored by Henry Ford Community College, supporting an event that reflected both his love of golf and his commitment to education and community involvement.

His service extended into civic and local historical work as well. He was a past president of the Lincoln Park Historical Society, sharing in the preservation of local heritage, and he served on the Grosse Ile Township board of trustees from 2016 to 2020, offering leadership and public service to his community.

Outside of his many professional and civic responsibilities, James embraced life with enthusiasm. In his younger years, he enjoyed hockey, and throughout his life golf remained a constant passion. He treasured spending time with his family around the holidays and also enjoyed sailing and snowmobile trips, pursuits that brought together adventure, companionship, and the simple joys of time well spent.

Above all, James will be remembered by those closest to him. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Anne Nelson Howath, who carries forward his memory with love, numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James L. Nelson in 1991, and his mother, Anne Hazel Fredrica Motl in 2007.

James Nelson’s life was one of accomplishment, service, and enduring devotion to family, education, athletics, and community. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership and a memory that will be cherished by all who knew him.
