James Glen Smith, a devoted semi tanker driver and beloved member of the Monroe community, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026. Born on December 25, 1966, in Monroe, he was the son of Carson and Dorothy (Nash) Smith. James lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and a deep connection to those around him.

A proud graduate of Monroe High School, he married the love of his life, Tami Oakman, on May 12, 1998. James embraced life with a warm spirit and a generous heart. His career as a semi tanker driver was more than just a job; it was a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family. Beyond his professional life, James was a man of many interests and passions. He was an active member of the Sylvania Moose Lodge #1579 and the Erie Knights of Columbus #7413, where he found camaraderie and community.

James was a devoted NASCAR enthusiast and an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt, finding joy in the thrills of racing. He also loved spending time at the casino and had a fondness for lottery scratch-off tickets, always hoping for a lucky day. His social nature shone through in his love of playing and calling Bingo, engaging in card games, and sharing laughter with friends and family. Traveling to the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee was a cherished pastime, where he found peace amid nature’s beauty. Above all, James had a tender heart for the elderly, always taking time to connect and bring joy to their lives.

He is survived by Tami, his wife of he past 27 years; his loving children: Ciera Smith, Tabitha (Matt Tolles) Smith, and James (Sierra Knakiewicz) Smith III; and his treasured grandchildren: Emma Smith and Carson Smith-Tolles. James also leaves behind his devoted siblings Wayne Smith, Kathie Smith, Julie (Marc) Iocoangeli, Jimmy (Sue) Smith, Carol (Don) Druyor, Patsy (Alfred Stanley) Smith, and Shelia (Denny) Adair; as well as Sondra Oakman, his cherished mother-in-law, who shared in his life and love.

James’s memory is also tenderly held by those who have passed before him: his parents, his son James G. Smith II, his brother Larry Smith, and his father-in-law Jim Oakman. Their loss is deeply felt by all who knew James.

James Glen Smith’s life touched many hearts with his unwavering kindness, infectious enthusiasm for everyday joys, and the gentle warmth he extended to everyone he met. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and invaluable connections that will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate to know him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever remain a guiding light in the lives of his family and friends.
