Jimmie Douglas Toby, beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, in Canton, Michigan at the age of 88.
Jimmie was born on August 5, 1937, in the close-knit community of Evarts, Kentucky. From those beautiful mountain roots grew a man whose character embodied resilience, warmth, and steadfast love. The values he carried from his upbringing remained ever-present as guiding lights throughout his long, meaningful life. The memories made in Evarts included being an inaugural member of the Evarts High School Football Hall of Fame, for which his family was endlessly proud of him for.
He devoted 30 years of unwavering dedication as a dock worker for Roadway Express, earning the respect of colleagues and forming lifelong friendships shaped by honesty and hard work. His steadfast ethic and gentle humor made each workday lighter for those fortunate enough to share it with him.
Upon retirement, Jimmie discovered a deep joy in woodworking—a craft that allowed him to channel patience and creativity into beautiful pieces, each one a testament to his care and careful hands. But more fulfilling than his skill with wood was his lifelong devotion to his beloved wife Vallie Jean. Together, in the golden years of retirement, Jimmie and Vallie poured boundless love and joy into their only grandchild, Valerie, giving her memories of laughter, tenderness, and family bonds that will endure forever.
Jimmie’s faith was central to his life. As a deacon at Lincoln Park Church of Christ, he led by quiet example, letting compassion and humility define his service to others. His presence in the congregation was marked by sincerity, a ready smile, and open arms—ever grateful to give or receive fellowship.
Above all, Jimmie’s proudest legacy was his family. He was the devoted husband of the late Vallie Jean Toby, cherishing every moment they shared. He is survived by his loving son, Jimmy Toby, II (Kimberly), and his devoted daughter, Kimberly (Leo) Tomaszewski; by his adoring granddaughter, Valerie Tomaszewski, who brought him endless pride and happiness. Jimmie will also be deeply missed by his devoted siblings: sister Wanda (the late Jerry) Burkhart, brother Roger (Ruth) Toby, brother Wayne (the late Alice) Toby, and sister Phyllis (Joe) Daniel.
He now joins in rest his cherished wife, Vallie Jean; his parents, Gifford and Hazel Toby; his dear sister Charlotte (the late Don) Manning; and his brother Harold Toby.
Jimmie loved many and was loved by many. His gentle presence, unconditional generosity, and steadfast loyalty enriched the lives of all who knew him. His memory will continue in the laughter around family tables, in the beautifully crafted wood of his hands, and in the faith community he served with devotion.
Friends and family are invited to honor Jimmie’s life on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at The Allen Park Chapel – Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 10915 Allen Rd, Allen Park, MI. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. to noon and the funeral service will begin at noon. Burial will take place at Christian Memorial Gardens West Cemetery with family only.
Jimmie’s kindness, strength, and love leave an indelible mark on all fortunate to have shared his journey. May his memory continue to be a blessing to everyone who knew and loved him.
