Joan Sonnenberg, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and respected public servant, passed away on April 11, 2026. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 7, 1947, to the late Peter and Theresa Plaza. Joan’s life was marked by kindness, dedication, and a commitment to both family and community.
Joan's early years laid a strong foundation for her future endeavors. She graduated from Madison Heights High School on June 15, 1966, where she was an active member of the Student Council and the National Honor Society. Her thirst for knowledge and passion for understanding others led her to Western Michigan University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology.
It was at Western Michigan University that Joan met her beloved husband, Gary Sonnenberg. The couple married on June 18, 1971, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership. Their journey together included a memorable two-year honeymoon spent serving in the U.S. Army in Giessen, Germany.
Joan dedicated her career to serving the state of Michigan in protective services, a role in which she demonstrated unwavering commitment and professionalism. Her work contributed to the safety and well-being of many, reflecting her innate compassion and sense of duty.
Outside of her professional life, Joan embraced the outdoors and enjoyed a variety of recreational activities. She was an avid skier, boater, camper, bowler, and golfer. Joan and Gary first made their home in Wyandotte, then Riverview, and eventually settled on Grosse Ile, where they created many cherished memories.
Joan is lovingly remembered by her husband, Gary Sonnenberg; her children, Jared and Erica Sonnenberg; her grandson, Brendan (Emily) Sonnenberg; and her great-granddaughter, Isla Sonnenberg. She is preceded in death by her siblings, Christine, Delores and Peter.
A memorial gathering will be held on May 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., at The Trenton Chapel - Martenson Family OfFuneral Homes, located at 3200 West Rd, Trenton, Michigan 48183. These events offer an opportunity for all who knew Joan to come together in remembrance and celebration of her life.
Joan Sonnenberg’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and service. Her memory will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
