John C. Bates, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on February 19, 2026, in Grosse Ile, Michigan, after a long battle with dementia. Born on August 17, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, John lived a life filled with love, laughter, and immense accomplishments that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Attending Michigan State University on a full-ride scholarship laid the foundation for his work ethic, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit. In 1963, John began his illustrious 60-year career at Heidtman Steel Products. His relentless dedication and exceptional leadership abilities led his ascent to owner, president, and chairman of the board. In 2013 he was named Service Center Executive of the Year, one of the metal industry’s highest honors. Despite his tremendous professional success, he always remained grounded and approachable.

His proudest accomplishment was his family, whom he cherished deeply. John celebrated the diverse and unique achievements of his children and grandchildren with an unwavering pride that resonated through every family gathering. John's personality was legendary… he was the life of the party, with a beautiful smile that lit up any room. Those who were fortunate enough to be around him found joy in his fun-loving nature and genuine kindness.

John's adventurous spirit took him across the globe, traveling the world with his beloved wife Sarah, with whom he shared almost 25 wonderful years of marriage. They relished supporting the grandchildren’s numerous athletic competitions, concerts, and scouting events. Whether fishing on his boat in the Florida Keys or engaging in friendly competition playing euchre, pinochle, or bridge, each moment was filled with laughter and shared memories. In his younger days, he enjoyed skiing in the Western states with friends, and his enthusiasm for swimming and diving showcased his zest for life.

John took immense joy in his role as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. His family blossomed under his care, including wife Sarah J. Bates and children Debra (Ben) Shinkle, Darlene (Steve) Dotson, Suz (Victor) Colon, John C. (Kristen) Bates, Jr., Lindsay (Josh) Miller, Dr. Shannon Bates (Dylan Armbrustmacher), and stepchildren Brooklyn and Evan Brown. He was also a proud grandfather to Joshua (Kelsey) Dotson, Blain Shinkle, Luke Dotson, Ellie (Brad) McMunn, Patrick Dotson, Nathan Dotson, Maceo Colon, Noah Colon, John C. Bates III, Layla, Jensen, and Jaxson Miller, as well as a devoted great-grandfather to Eli and Avery Dotson.

This big, blended family plus former wife Juila Bates, mother to Lindsay and Shannon, will remember him not only for his accomplishments but for the warmth and light he brought into their lives. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lucille Bates; his brother, Alan Bates; and former wife and mother of his first four children, Arlene.

As we reflect on John’s legacy, we celebrate a life well-lived, characterized by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family, friends, and employees. He will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit and the beautiful memories created will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.

Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the Trenton Chapel of The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes located at 3200 West Road, 48183. Funeral services are private.
