Leonard A. Smith

Leonard A. Smith; age 71, August 16, 2017 of Melvindale. Beloved husband of Sharon. Loving dad of Juanita (Mark) Vorel, Tom (Rebecca) Smith and Richard (Tina) Limon. Dearest grandpa of Sierra and Hailey Smith; Elizabeth and Jake Vorel; Alex (Adam) Eastlake, Ava and Ricky Limon. Preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Eleanor. Lennie graduated from Detroit's Western High School in 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served in the Navy during the Vietnam war and traveled overseas many times in service to his country. His years in the navy remained one of his proudest achievements throughout his life. An avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, Leonard kept careful records of Tigers game scores and schedules. His wedding to his beloved Sharon coincided with the Tigers' 1968 World Series Victory (making hotel rooms scarce in the area!) A native Detroiter, he celebrated happily with his family the Tigers next World Series victory in 1984 (Bless you, Boys!) Among his hobbies were playing cards particularly pinochle and cribbage along the Detroit Riverfront in Wyandotte. He also enjoyed visiting the casinos and trying his luck at the slot machines. Above all else, Leonard loved his family. He enjoyed nothing more than a BBQ at his son's home with his children and their families in attendance. He will be greatly missed by all and leaves a hole in our hearts. Also surviving Leonard are his sisters-in-law Donna Whipple and Marijane (Don) Passeno. He was a beloved uncle to: Carl (Kathleen) Hood, Sarah (Brian) Gill and Vikki Hood. The family suggests donations in memory of Lennie to the American Cancer Society.
