Marilyn Jean Schafer, age 85, passed away at home with her husband by her side on Monday, February 7, 2022 a few days after leaving Wyandotte Henry Ford Hospital. She was born August 10, 1936 in Wyandotte, MI, the daughter of William R. Paton and Geraldine Ruth Ferree. On January 24, 1959, she married Floyd H. Schafer and together they shared 63 loving years. Marilyn graduated from high school and began her career as a secretary at the Gerisch Middle School. She was a very kind, caring person and dedicated her life to raising her family and taking care of her mother-in-law for 22 years who lived next door. She also helped care for her ageing father and mother for many years before their deaths. Marilyn was an avid gardener; she loved to grow and work in her flower gardens. She also loved to quilt and crochet, make many Quilts and Afghans for the family. She loved going to her grandfather’s cottage on Dyers Bay in Ontario, Canada. When her father purchased the cottage, she spent as many summers as possible visiting the shores of Dyers Bay. When her father was ageing, he asked if she would like to purchase the cottage, and so she became the owner of one of her favorite places. She then continued to spend 22 summers at “her cottage”, in fact she worked alongside her husband, rebuilding it into a year-around home that she really enjoyed for many years. Marilyn, “Jean” as she was called by her family and friends, will be remembered as a loving wife, a wonderful mother, a very kind and compassionate woman with a beautiful smile and sparkling blue eyes, who feared God and raised her children accordingly. A great lady! Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Floyd, and children; Lauren Schafer of Southgate, MI, Sharlon Schafer of Riverview, MI, Andrew Schafer and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Ann (Blaze) Schafer of Livonia, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Daniel in infancy and two brothers, Gerald and William. She also is survived by her sister Carol (Paton) Peterson and brother-in-law Jerome Peterson of Brighton, MI and sister-in-law Marge (Nemeth) Paton of Riverview, MI as well as many nieces in nephews. A visitation in honor of Marilyn “Jean” will be held on Thursday February 10, 2022 at The Allen Park Chapel Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 10915 Allen Rd., Allen Park, MI 48101 from 2:00pm until 7:00pm.
