Samuel Richard Gay, age 85, of Rockwood, MI passed away peacefully Saturday August 16, 2014 at Oakwood Southshore Hospital Trenton, MI. Sam was born January 7, 1929 in Rockwood, MI to Frank and Louise (Bunkleman) Gay; he graduated from Trenton High School. Sam married Helen E. "Betty" Weightman on November 18, 1950; sadly she preceded him in death on August 31, 2009. Sam was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service for many years, he also was a scout leader, Little League baseball coach, a church softball league coach, and avidly supported every activity in which his children participated in. For those of you who knew Sam, knew that he was always positive and upbeat, he was always ready to help anybody. His memberships included Rockwood First Congregational Church where he was very active in all church functions, Rockwood Historical Society, Pointe Mouillee State Game Area Ducks Unlimited, founding member of the O.A. Carlson High School booster club and he and his wife Betty were Honorary Life Members of the Golden Retriever Club of America and founding member of the Fort Detroit Golden Retriever Club. Sam lived his entire life in one of the three houses on the land of his family farm on the shore of Lake Erie, most of which is now known as the central portion of the Lake Erie Metro Park. Sam is survived by his children, George Gay of Colorado Springs, CO, Samuel "Richard" Gay Jr. of Lake Orion, MI, Lisa (Bruce) Hopper of Waukesha, WI, Sara Gay of Whitmore Lake, MI and Rebecca (Andre) Dubois of Monroe, MI; grandchildren, Amanda Gay, Meghan Hopper, Ian Hopper and Caitlin Hopper; siblings, Richard Gay of Harbor Springs, MI and Margaret Charlesworth of Temperance, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty and brothers Johnny and Robert. In keeping with Sam's wishes there will be no visitation.
