Richard "Dick" Mcgovern

Richard J. (Dick) McGovern, 88, of Monroe passed away peacefully in his home Monday, July 9, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Born in Grand Rapids, MI on April 25, 1930, he was the son of Harry R. and Hilda (Roggelin) McGovern. He married Patricia (Nancy) Kohler May 8, 1954 at St. Mary Church in Monroe. She preceded him in death November 1, 2008. Dick was a 1948 graduate of Monroe High School and served in the U.S. Army overseas from January 1949 until October 1952 attaining the rank of Staff Sgt. Dick was employed by Ace Paper Products, Inter-Pack Corp., and Toledo Plate and Window Glass, retiring from Eye Surgeons of Monroe in 1999. He was a member of St. Mary Parish of Monroe and a life member of Monroe Post 1138 V.F.W. Dick is survived by his children John (Deborah) McGovern of Monroe, David (Monica) McGovern of Palatine, IL, Thomas McGovern of Columbus, OH and Jean (David) Knight of Westland. Also surviving are grandchildren Kaylynn (Benjamin) Schreiber, Garrett McGovern, Charles (Dana) McGovern, Erin (Alex) Chandonet, Ryan McGovern, Megan Knight and Donovan McGovern and a great-granddaughter, Breanne Patricia Schreiber. Cremation has taken place and the family will plan a memorial at a later date. Memorials may be made to VFW National Home of Children, 3573 S. Waverly Rd., Eaton Rapids, MI. 48827 or The Salvation Army. The family would like to give very special thanks to the wonderful staff of St. Joseph Mercy Hospice of Southeast Michigan for their kindness and support during the past 9 months. We would also like to thank all of Dick's buddies at Larson's Bar and Pete's Garage for many years of friendship. In accordance with Dick's wishes, cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Allore Chapel-Martenson Family of Funeral Homes
