Sheldon Herbert Lapham, affectionately known as “Shelly,” was born on April 4, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, to Peter and Erma (Brisbois) Lapham, and died peacefully at home on October 24, 2025, in Taylor, Michigan. On August 25, 1949, he married the love of his life, Pauline Stoddart. Together they shared 44 devoted years until her passing in 1994.
Shelly was a cherished father, grandfather, partner, and friend whose gentle spirit and steadfast kindness left a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His life was a testament to service—first to his country as a proud Army serviceman during World War II, then to his family as a hardworking truck driver for over four decades, and always to his community as a generous jack-of-all-trades.
Whether it was a lawn mower, snow blower, mini bike, or anything in between, Shelly could fix it—and did, with joy. His garage shop was more than a workspace; it was a gathering place where relationships were built and laughter was shared. He was the neighbor everyone counted on, and the friend who never hesitated to help.
Faith and community were cornerstones of Shelly’s life. He was a longtime supporter of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church (St. Cyril’s) and the St. Constance parish, attending services faithfully until his health made it difficult.
Shelly is survived by his devoted life partner, travel companion, and caregiver of 29 years, Betty Hicks; his loving daughter, Marilyn (Michael) Wright; and his treasured granddaughters, Kyla (Shalom) Cross and Sara (Joey) Bibbler. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, each carrying fond memories of Shelly’s warmth, humor, and the simple joys he made unforgettable.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Pauline, his parents, and all eight of his siblings—whose love and lessons helped shape the man he became. Their legacy lives on through him, just as his will live on through us.
Shelly’s presence was a gift, and his memory will remain a guiding light—a reminder of the power of kindness, the strength of family, and the joy of a life well lived.
In honor of Shelly, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
