Shirley Ann Schiappacasse, a dedicated and cherished family woman and member of the Trenton community, passed away February 28,2026, at Symphony Applewood in Woodhaven. Born on June 12, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, Shirley’s life was marked by a profound commitment to her family and to education.

Shirley graduated from Osborne High School in Detroit before continuing her education. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Wayne State University and followed that with a master’s degree from Madonna University. Throughout her career, she made a significant impact as a Special Education Teacher at Southwestern High School in Detroit, where she devoted 22 years of her life before retiring in 2000. Her passion for teaching and her dedication to her students were evident in every aspect of her work.

Family was at the heart of Shirley's life, and she proudly considered her role as a mother one of her greatest accomplishments. She was an active and supportive mother, attending all her sons' activities and sporting events. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband, Ed, with whom she shared a loving marriage since June 11, 1966. She leaves behind her sons, Ed (Andi) and John (Sara), along with grandsons Nicholas and Thomas, who will remember her warmth and support. Additionally, she is survived by her brother, Michael (Connie) Tyrkus, and her nephews, Michael and Matthew. Shirley’s loving family and friends will deeply miss her presence in their lives.

Shirley had a variety of interests that enriched her life. She loved to travel, with Aruba holding a special place in her heart. Her creativity thrived in crafts, and she cherished her visits to Sibley Gardens, where she found solace multiple times a week.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Mary (Stolar) Tyrkus, but her loving spirit lives on in all those who had the privilege of knowing her. She will also be missed by her three devoted Sheepdogs: Betsy, Maggie, and Abbie, who were a source of joy and companionship in her life.

As we remember Shirley, we honor a woman whose legacy lies in her contributions to education, her passionate family life, and the love she shared with everyone around her.

In keeping with her wishes, there will not be any services. Memorial contributions to honor her life may be made to the Michigan Humane Society
