Listen to Obituary

Vernell Wilson, born August 12, 1935, on Big Pine, North Carolina, passed away surrounded by the family she loved so deeply. Her life was defined by faith, resilience, humor, and a devotion to the people and places that shaped her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joe Wilson; her parents, Noah and Florney Buckner; and her daughter, Nancy Jo Wilson. Together, these loved ones formed the foundation of a family rooted in love, loyalty, and laughter.

Vernell is survived by her daughter Melinda and son-in-law Rick Brown; her son Mark Wilson and daughter-in-law Anita Wilson. She was a proud Grammy to Peyton and his wife Carlie Sloan, Preston Sloan, Austin Sloan, Anthony Wilson, Destiney Wilson, Dante Wilson, and Meg Wilson. Her joy continued through her great-grandchildren, Michael Wilson and Adam Friason, who brought light to her later years.

Vernell lived a life rich with simple joys. She loved working puzzles, tending her garden, and sharing stories—often with a sparkle in her eye and a quick-witted comeback ready to go. Even in her final days, her humor never faded. She often said, “You can laugh or you can cry about it,” and she always chose laughter. That spirit became a gift she passed on to everyone around her.

Her faith was the foundation of her life. Vernell served many years at River Rouge Free Will Baptist Church, and she shared her musical gifts as the longtime pianist at Grace Free Will Baptist Church. She also faithfully served at Bethel Free Will Baptist Church and Southgate Free Will Baptist Church, offering her time, her music, and her heart wherever she was needed. Beyond her church service, she taught piano for many years, shaping young musicians with patience, encouragement, and a love for music. She played for weddings endlessly over the years, blessing countless couples with her talent on their most meaningful day.

Vernell was also dedicated to her professional life. She worked more than 25 years at Wade Trim and Associates, where she was known for her reliability and strong work ethic, and later spent 8 years at Computer Confidence, bringing the same commitment and warmth to her colleagues and clients.

Vernell’s legacy is one of love, strength, service, and joy. She will be remembered for her warm heart, her sharp humor, her unwavering faith, and the way she made every person feel seen and cherished. Her family and friends will carry her stories, her laughter, and her example with them always.
